What concrete spalling means
Spalling occurs when the concrete surface cracks, flakes or breaks away. A common cause is moisture reaching embedded reinforcing steel. As the steel corrodes, it expands and places pressure on the surrounding concrete. The damage may appear as rust staining, hollow-sounding areas, cracking parallel to the rebar or pieces breaking from an edge or soffit.
A durable repair requires more than covering the visible hole. Loose concrete must be removed to sound material, affected steel must be exposed sufficiently for treatment, and the repair area must be rebuilt with compatible materials and proper preparation.
